Cartoons: Russian Spies

Several of today's UK national dailies feature cartoons relating to the Russian spy scandal in the US (see earlier post). My favourite is this one by Peter Brookes from The Times.

American Gothic

The cartoon is almost an exact copy of the famous American Gothic painting by Grant Wood, which has been parodied countless times. In Brookes's version, the man bears a striking resemblance to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Farmer Putin tells his wife, "I don't know how much longer we can stay under cover!" Brilliant!

VOCABULARY
If you are under cover, you are hiding your true identity. The expression is often used in relation to secret agents or spies. • All of the accused were allegedly deep under cover, purporting to lead normal family lives in the U.S. northeast while also gathering and transmitting intelligence about U.S. foreign relations back to Moscow.

A guy walks into a bar and approaches the barman, 'Can I have a pint of Less, please?' I'm sorry sir, 'the barman replies,

looking slightly puzzled, 'I've not come across that one before. Is it a spirit?'

'I've no idea, 'replies the guy, 'The thing is, I went to see my doctor last week and he told me that I should drink less.'

A dangerous criminal had escaped, so the police issued the usual photographs: left profile, front view, and right profile. A few days later they received the following telegram from an Irish detective:

"Have captured the fellow on the left, and the fellow in the middle, and at the rate I'm going it won't be long before I get the fellow on the right as well".

A bear and a bunny are sitting in a forest taking a shit. The bear leans over to the bunny and says "Do you ever have the problem of shit sticking to your fur"?
The bunny says "No".
So the bear grabs the bunny and wipes his ass.

Gap filler technology for seamless communication on train

A further challenge consist in the selection of an appropriate technology for the GF, able to provide a sufficient robustness respect to the impairments introduced by the propagation environment.
• a transparent architecture, where the GF provides the in-tunnel coverage by just replicating the signal present on the satellite segment in a different frequency band;
• a semi-transparent architecture, where the GF just suites the signal waveform to the in-tunnel channel conditions (i.e. layers above the physical one are left unchanged);
• a non-transparent architecture, where the GF modifies not only the waveform of the signal, but also provides further functionalities (e.g. traffic filtering, QoS scheduling, etc.) up to the IP level.
